THE SEVENTH ANNUAL UMSTEAD 100 MILE
ENDURANCE RUN WITH 50 MILE OPTION

2001 Race Information Packet

Character and
Philosophy of
the Race:
The Umstead 100 Mile Endurance Run is designed with several basic concepts in mind. It will help new ultrarunners to bridge the quantum leap from 50 mile runs to the mountainous and more rigorous demands of most 100 mile endurance runs. It will allow those who have difficulty finishing 100 miles in 24 hours or just finishing 100 miles an opportunity to do so when severe topography, heat, and getting lost are removed as major obstacles. The seasoned runner will find this to be an excellent training run for the Massanutten 100, Leadville 100, Mohican 100, Wasatch 100, Western States 100 and other 100 mile mountain runs. The Umstead 100 can serve many purposes, depending on your level of development and personal goals.

Location: Umstead State Park, near Raleigh and Cary, North Carolina (see enclosed map). The race headquarters and start/finish will be located at Camp Lapihio in Umstead Park. Follow the signs for Camp Lapihio Group Camp from the US 70 (Glenwood Avenue) Park entrance. The Camp Lapihio Group Camp is approximately 3 miles into the Park from the US 70 entrance.
Time Limit: There will be a 30 hour time limit for the race. There is a cutoff time of 27 hours at the 90 mile point. Any participant who continues after that time/point will not be guaranteed support.
Course: The course is a 10 mile loop with spurs in Umstead Park. The course will be repeated 10 times equaling 100 miles. There are two out and back spurs on the course. One is 0.5 mile long to access the start/finish aid station and parking. The other is the 1.9 mile spur to access aid station number 2. This spur allows you to see fellow runners up to 3.8 miles behind and in front of you, as well as providing some race camaraderie. The distance has been rolled with a calibrated wheel and is very accurate. The course is along a converted gravel and dirt road which now serves as a running, biking and bridle trail through the Park. The trail width is approximately 10 to 15 feet and footing is excellent.

The course's surface is primarily "crusher run" material consisting of small stones and finer material. We recommend a trail type shoe with extra padding or air bag under the ball of the foot. This type shoe will provide protection from the small stones and pay dividends late in the race.

There is no motor vehicular traffic except the very occasional official park vehicle on the majority of the course. There is approximately 1.5 miles with very light park traffic. There will also be race (crew) oriented traffic on this 1.5 mile section. There will be some bike traffic and a few horses during the course of the day.

The course is rolling topography with a total of 8000 feet of climb over the 100 miles. The entire course is runnable for front runners with nicely spaced hills (see profile graph). The course will be well marked. Getting lost, even for a short time, will be difficult. All creek crossings are on permanent bridges. The course will be marked with cherry colored Umstead 100 logo direction signs and with glow sticks at night.

The start/finish line is located at the Camp Lapihio Headquarters aid station. Each loop ends as you enter the aid station. The next loop begins toward the pier of Lake Sycamore (800') and then back past the HQS aid station. The start of laps 2-5 will traverse around the pier at Lake Sycamore. Laps 6-10 turn around at the turn around sign near the pier. Lap 1, the race start, will begin at the Sycamore Lake Pier.
Qualifying: You must have completed at least a 50 mile race in the time allowed for that race, since April 1, 1999 or show proof of adequate training for acceptance into the 100 mile event. Runners desiring a 50 mile only entry need to denote such on the race application. There are no formal qualifications for the 50 mile run except good judgment as to your fitness for such an event.
Entry Fee: $75, if postmarked by March 1, 2001. $100 thereafter. Make checks payable to the North Carolina Ultra Running Association. No entries accepted on race day. Entries are limited to the first 160 runners. No refunds after March 15. Refunds before March 15 will be less a $10 administration fee. Entry fee includes race support, either a race T-shirt or race hat, a finisher certificate, and a Friday night spaghetti dinner. Completion awards may be ordered after the race.
Aid Stations: Aid will be at 2 manned aid stations for each 10 mile loop. They are located at the start/finish and 4.1 mile point. Aid station # 2 (Tom & Jerry's Ptomaine Tavern) will be located at the end of the 1.9 mile spur. There will be unlimited crew access at the start/finish. Access to aid station # 2 can be made by a 13 mile drive around the park or a 4-mile walk or bike trip along the course. Cookies, fruit, potato slices, sandwiches, hard candy, bananas, crackers, hamburgers, hot dogs, pretzels, soup, ice cream, yogurt, pizza and a variety of other food will be available at each aid station. Drinks will include water, All Sport, Gatorade, Pepsi, Mt. Dew, coffee and milk. We believe our aid stations are second to none. "Water only" stops are available at the 0.8, 2.2, 5.9 and 7.6 mile points. Latrines will be available at all aid stations and the 2.2, 5.9 and 7.6 mile points. The park rangers have asked that runners make every effort to use the available latrines and not the woods.
Medical
Checks:
There will be no medical checks before, after or during the race. Each entrant is responsible for knowing their own physical limitations. We encourage each entrant to get a complete physical before participating in this race. The Red Cross will be available at HQS aid station. Rex Hospital is located 3 miles from the course's eastern flank and transportation will be supplied for those with serious problems. If in the opinion of the race director or aid station captains, your physical or mental condition deteriorates to the point of endangering your safety, you will be withdrawn from the race.
Race
Performance:
Each runner is expected to be courteous to aid station volunteers and other runners. The runner is also responsible for the actions of his/her crew members. No pets will be allowed. Littering beyond 300 feet from aid stations is prohibited and grounds for removal from the race.
Weather: normal high: 70     normal low: 44
moon: almost full (bring your flashlight)
Drop Bags: Drop bags will be allowed at the start/finish and at aid station # 2. Drop bags must be delivered to the starting line by 5:30 a.m. on race day. They will be transported to aid station # 2 before the race starts. Return of drop bags from aid station # 2 should be scheduled through the aid station captain by the runner as they pass through the station for the last time. There sometimes is a lengthy delay in getting drop bags back to the headquarters area depending on unscheduled trips by race staff between aid stations. Runners or crew may drive around the Park and retrieve drop bags from aid station # 2. At the start/finish aid station the majority of runners vehicles will only be 100 to 200 feet from the race course. You may choose to use your vehicle for personal needs there (see parking at Camp Lapihio) or leave your drop bag in the headquarters building immediately adjacent to the HQS aid station and start/finish line.
Crews: Crews are welcome but are not necessary for this race. Crew members are allowed at the start/finish at any time. Access to aid station # 2 can be made by a 4 mile walk or bike ride along the course or a 13 mile drive around the outside of the park. Parking is very limited at aid station # 2 so we encourage crew members not to visit this site unless support is very necessary or to retrieve drop bags. Crew members are allowed on the course to pace their racer only after 6 PM or with race director or aid station captain permission. There will be no crew parking on the park access roads inside or outside Camp Lapihio.

We like to think of the Umstead as one big happy family type event. Race crew are welcome to assist with the operation of the aid stations. We appreciate any assistance, just come on up and offer to help. Our only requirement is a smiling face and patience with our runners. If running is not your thing and you have other activities planned, don't worry, your runner will be well taken care of. We want everyone to enjoy their visit to the Umstead 100.
Accommodations
Food/Airport:
Motel listing, location, and phone numbers are on the enclosed map. Note the map key for identification of lettered and numbered points of interest. Also included on the map are eating and shopping opportunities. There are numerous eating establishments on US 70 east of the Park (towards Raleigh) and in the Cary area. For tent camping information at Umstead Park call 919-571-4170. See below for cabin lodging at Camp Lapihio Group Camp. The airport is immediately adjacent to Umstead Park. Lodging indicated on the map is as close as three miles from the US 70 Park gate. We have negotiated a $59.00 rate at the Hampton Inn on Glenwood Avenue, phone 919-782-1112. The Hampton Inn will mainatin a ride matching service for race participants at the front desk. Sign up if you eitherneed a ride or are willing to give other runners a ride to race events. This is a service of Hampton Inn and not race management.
Camp Lapihio: Race headquarters, the start/finish, and aid station #1 (Barry and Marsha's Belly Busting Buffet) will be located at Camp Lapihio Group Camp. The Camp may be accessed from the main park gate off US70 (Glenwood Avenue). At the camp we will have access to a mess hall, restrooms, showers, running water and 40 primitive cabins. Parking in Camp Lapihio is scattered among various satellite cabin groups. Most parking, but not all, will be adjacent to the course. The majority of the parking is within 200 feet of the course. We will have a drop bag site at the aid station if you have to park further away from the race course than you desire.

The primitive cabins are just that, primitive. They are small (150 to 225 sq. ft.) with no electricity or water. They do have built in bunks with mattresses, 2 to 4 per cabin. Bring your own pillows, sheets, blankets or sleeping bag. They provide a roof over your head and not much more. There is running water, latrines and showers adjacent to the cabins. Runners are welcome to stay in these cabins on a first come, first serve basis. The cabins may be reserved by enclosing payment with your entry form. There will be a $10 per person charge to use the cabins for the weekend. Cabins are available to runners from Noon on Friday until 6:00 pm on Sunday. Please clean up your cabin as you leave. If we get a strong demand for the cabins we may ask runners to share accommodations, but we will make every effort to keep requested groups together. We will assign the cabins closest to the race course first. Twenty five cabins are in Lapihio and fifteen are located 1/2 mile away at Camp Crabtree. The cabins have become a popular feature of the race so get your reservations in early.

The cabins will also be available for all runners after the race (no charge) to rest up before you go home.
Parking At
Camp Lapihio:
Parking will be scattered throughout the satellite cabin groups at Camp Lapihio. To facilitate parking on Saturday morning, parking areas will be assigned to each runner based on race numbers and/or cabin assignment. The cabin groupings are 500 to 1000 feet from race headquarters, the main lodge, and the start/finish line. The race course itself winds through the four cabin groups. In some places parking will be within 20 feet of the course and others will be up to 200 feet, with a few spaces even more. At registration please check with our parking coordinator to get your assigned parking location. I strongly suggest you find your location immediately so you will be familiar with it for Saturday morning in the dark. The smoother parking goes Saturday morning the better for everyone. There will be no runner or crew parking adjacent to the race headquarters building or on the park access roads.
Maps: A general map of Raleigh, a park/course map and a course profile graph are enclosed as part of the race information packet.
Award: A beautiful 1 inch thick acrylic triangle award will be presented to the first place male and female finisher. All other 100 mile finishers may order a similar, smaller completion award for $40 after the race. Additionally, each finisher will receive a "Hundred Miler" certificate suitable for framing from the North Carolina Ultra Running Association. Examples of the awards will be on display at the race briefing.
Friday Night
Spaghetti
Dinner:
We offer a free pre-race Spaghetti dinner to all runners, one crew member, and race staff. Additional crew and/or visitors are invited for a $5.00 fee, payable at Friday Registration. On your entry form please let us know if you intend to eat with us and how many will be eating. The meal will be served at 6:00 p.m. in the race headquarters building. The meals' purpose is two fold: one to encourage race camaraderie and, second, to provide a good meal for people staying in the cabins. Experience has taught us that it is difficult to leave the race briefing at 6:00 to eat and be back by 8:00 when the park gate closes. If you are leaving the park after the meal be sure to be on your way to the gate by 7:45 p.m.
Access to
the Park:
The main park gate is normally opened at 8:00 a.m. and closed at 8:00 p.m. (This applies to race Friday night). On race day arrangements will be made to open the US 70 gate at 5:00 a.m. Once the gate is closed at 8:00 p.m., park management will maintain access control into and out of the Park. Please note, park management, and not race management will control access into and out of the park. On Saturday night only, access in and out will be limited to one hour intervals (on the hour) unless there is an emergency. Crew members should be back in the park prior to 8:00 p.m. or they will have to wait until the gate is opened on the interval schedule.
Please note that traffic is very congested on I-40 and US 70 on Friday afternoons, so allow yourself plenty of time to get to the race registration, briefing and dinner.
50 Mile
Option:
This race is conducted primarily as a 100 mile event, however for those who begin the race and finish 50 miles or more, we will report the 50 mile time to UltraRunning. There will be a smaller version of the 100 Mile Acrylic Triangle Award that may be ordered by 50 mile finishers for $30.
Post Race
Activities:
There will be no awards ceremonies. 100 mile certificates and race statistics will be mailed out following the race.
